Ages from the "Mogod Formation" of the Permian-Triassic igneous rocks in the Sayan-Baikal belt, northern Mongolia

Late Paleozoic–Early Mesozoic volcano-plutonic rock unit at the southern margin of the Sayan–Baikal belt, Mongolia is a significant factor in understanding the Paleozoic–Mesozoic arc system along the Siberian continental margin. The Permian–Triassic igneous rocks have been divided into the Lower–Middle Permian Khanui Group, Late Permian–Early Triassic Selenge plutonic rock complex, Permian?–Middle Triassic Erdenet plutonic rock complex, and Upper Triassic– Lower Jurassic Mogod Formation. However, a U-Pb age pointing latest Permian was recently reported from the Khanui Group, and stratigraphy of the Permian–Triassic igneous rocks is required to be reexamined. This paper describes zircon U-Pb age of 257.6 ± 3.6 Ma (Late Permian) and hornblende K-Ar age of 292.9 ± 14.1 Ma (Early Permian) from the Mogod Formation, which has previously been assigned to Upper Triassic–Lower Jurassic, and presents a possibility that the stratigraphic division of the Permian–Triassic igneous rocks is revised.

In response to the prolonged closure of Nagoya University Museum due to the COVID-19 calamity in 2020, we have posted a new web page, ‘Nagoya University Museum at Home’ on the museum website as a way to deliver the museum’s original educational contents to the public. Six contents were posted in ‘Nagoya University Museum at Home’, including 1) Inside the museum (a video taken by a drone), 2) Let’s know the natural history illustration, 3) Let’s meet real things: introduction movies of permanent exhibitions, 4) Posts from the Botanical Garden, 5) Essays on the museum collections, and 6) Skeleton puzzles.

Nagoya University Museum is boldly engaged in higher education and research activities at the university, as well as the museum’s exhibits and its educational activities, with the aim of becoming a “museum for the next generation.” In particular, as one of the educational activities that make the best effort with the characteristics of the university museum, we have been focusing on establishing a support system for undergraduate and graduate students’ experiential learning. We hope they gain opportunities to engage in social activities through the museum, and by accumulating experiences, they will successfully contribute to society.
Here, we report that, together with eight students, we formed a working group for Nagoya University Museum Student Partnership “MusaForum” in April 2020, and started an organizational activity. We aim to discover the “new value more than ever” of the museum through the teamwork of multi-talented students with their interests, specialties, and challenging spirits.
